Counseling

Counseling referrals are available to individuals and families experiencing depression, anger or other emotional difficulties related to aging or caregiving issues. Mood changes or behavioral signals that may indicate a need for therapeutic intervention with elders include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depressed, sad affect
  • Aggressive or agitated behaviors
  • Isolating behaviors
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Disturbed sleep pattern
  • Loss of interest in usual activities

Critical times when an older adult may be in need of therapeutic intervention include:

  • Periods of change in living situations
  • Immediately after discharge from an inpatient geriatric psychiatric treatment program
  • Times of loss of loved ones
  • Periods of decline in mental or physical well-being that are overwhelming to the patient
  • Times of patient/family conflict

Family members who are caring for an elderly family member often experience extreme stress in attempting to incorporate their caregiving duties into their daily lives. Individual consultation and support groups can help caregivers cope with challenges.
